Wendy's Nepal Burns Reconstruction 2013 Fundraising

Story

Hi, my name is Wendy White - I am a Registered Nurse and Educator based on the Central Coast NSW
Several years ago I was given a wonderful opportunity to join a burns reconstructive surgical multidisciplinary team. As a member of this group I am involved in pre and post operative patient care along with the delivery of educational sessions for the Nepali health care professionals. This year I will be returning for the 4th time, but many team members have donated their skills, knowledge and experience over the years and they are an inspiration to me.
Becoming a member of this team (made up of some pretty special individuals) and being a part of this annual project, is something I look forward to and work towards with anticipation. Again this year the reconstructive surgical lead is Dr David Pennington who will be supported by both operating room and ward team volunteers, working along side local Nepali Doctors and Nurses.
The children and adults affected by burn injury (unfortunately common injuries due to open fires in the home for heating and cooking) often live in remote regional areas and if they survive the injury, can develop disfiguring burn scar contracture. This negatively impacts not only on their aesthetic appearance, but on their ability to function and in some cases undertake even the simplest of tasks. A key objective of our team is to improve functionality, providing opportunities where possible, for the young burn survivors to grow and develop and for adults to be able to take part in activities of daily living and work.
I come away each year inspired and humbled by their strenght, tenacity and the sense of 'community'  demonstrated by Nepali patients / family and carers in often difficult and challenging circumstances.
All of those treated by this volunteer group are fully funded for their surgery and follow up care, enabling many of them to have life changing procedures, which would otherwise be unavailable to them either by geography or through financial hardship.
In 2013, we are looking to fund >35 operations ($750 - 1000 per procedure) and with no major government funding, this program is supported by volunteers fundraising efforts, generous individuals and organisations. Through your donations you are providing much needed funds towards these pre and post operative medical expenses and assist in the associated travel costs for me as a team member.
You can help.......secure online donations are quick and easy to do. Thanks so much for your support.
